Getting a visa

General information for foreign nationals with ordinary passeports

Unless you are exempt, you are required to have a visa to enter in France. It must be applied for from the relevant French embassy or consulate in the applicant’s country of residence.

For stays of less than 90 days (3 months), you need to apply for a short-stay "Schengen" visa:

This type of visa is generally issued for tourism, business travel, family visits or short training courses, internships.

Exemption from visa requirements for nationals of the following countries:

 nationals of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland;

 Albania *, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda) Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Brunei, Bolivia, Bosnia *, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Solomon Islands, Israel, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Malaysia, Mauritius, Micronesia, Monaco, Nauru, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Palau ° Panama, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea (only for New Caledonia), Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, Holy See, Western Samoa , Seychelles, Taiwan (passport bearing the number of the identity card), Tonga, Tuvalu, Uruguay, Montenegro *, FYROM*,Serbia *;

*bearers of biometric passports only

 nationals of the following countries: Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, United States, Venezuela. This exemption does not apply in the case of gainful employment in a CTOM;

 bearers of passports of the Hong Kong special administrative region (People’s Republic of China) and the Macau special administrative region (People’s Republic of China). This exemption does not apply in the case of gainful employment in a CTOM;

 holders of a British passport marked " nationality ": " British Nationals (Overseas) " or " British Subject " and mention that the passport holder has the right of abode (mention) in the United Kingdom ;

 holders of a valid residence permit issued by the Préfet of a French overseas département, the High Commissioner of a French territorial collectivity or a Schengen state.

Airport transit visa or entry and short-stay visa (less than 90 days) valid for France and, except where marked otherwise on the visa sticker, the Schengen Area

Reduced rate. Application fees for nationals of the following countries- Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Bosnia*, Serbia *-are set at 35 euros for entry and short-stay visas.
*bearers of non-biometric passports only.

No charge. Visa fees are waived for the following foreign nationals:

 foreign members of families of nationals of other Member States of the EU/EEA and Switzerland (decree of 11 March 1994 modified) ;

 students and postgraduate students who undertake trips for the purposes of study or educational training (EC decision of 1 June 2006) ;

holders of French government study grants ;

holders of study grants from foreign governments and foundations and beneficiaries of EU programmes ;

beneficiaries of the France-Canada agreement on young people’s exchanges of 3 October 2003 (decree 2004-200 of 2 March 2004) ;

beneficiaries of the France-Japan working holidays agreement of 8 January 1999 ;

beneficiaries of the France-Korea working holidays agreement of 20 October 2008 ;

persons gainfully employed :

 scientific researchers (EC decision of 1 June 2006) ;

 employed workers and members of their families who are beneficiaries of family reunion, nationals of states that have signed a fee waiver agreement for these types of visa (Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey)
